From Mildura travel north-west on Ranfurly Way, right at Chaffey Park to the Mildara-Blass Winery, left on the Wentworth Road, right into Merbein Common, then follow the tracks to the river. And time your visit well, as the area can be boggy when wet. In the postwar years the winery strengthened its production of dry reds, and later diversified interstate and into sparkling wines. It became Mildara Blass. Grapes are purchased from about 400 local growers. Merbein has large recreation reserves at either end of the town, each with ovals. This followed a downturn in 1989 when a fire that destroyed Mildara's warehouse at Merbein near Mildura resulted in a loss of volume and shelf space due to the consequent disruption to supply. He established a winery at Irymple in 1888, set up the Mildura Winery (now the Mildara Blass Winery) at Merbein in 1911, and became the town's first mayor in 1920.
