Army Worms March On. Thursday Jun. 7th, 2012. Ralph LaPlant. All too familiar to most of us, army worms (tent caterpillars) seem to be everywhere. Although their defoliation to trees rarely kills, army worms are as much a nuisance as they are messy. The good news is that they will end visiting us in a few years as they have a cycle of 10 to 15 True Armyworm. June 26, 2020. Reports of true armyworm infestations continue to come in (Figure 1). At this time the infestation is not as widespread as in 2018. Most reports have been in wheat, pasture roadsides, and other grasses. Armyworms (Figure 2) cannot overwinter in Minnesota and moths migrate into the state each spring. Pheromone traps that were placed near northwestern MN grass seed fields detected a large armyworm flight on June 4-5. The moths from these flights would have sought out and laid eggs in stands of lush, dense grasses, such as cereals, weedy grasses, roadsides, pastures, and hay ground. Armyworm larvae are most active at night and other low Forest tent caterpillar. The forest tent caterpillar is a Minnesota native that feeds on (defoliates) the leaves of various hardwood trees and shrubs, including aspen, birch, basswood, and oak. Forest tent caterpillars are often mistakenly called armyworms because they congregate in groups to feed.
