In Erec et Enide, Chrétien de Troyes examines the marriage of a recreant knight and a once-silent wife as an identitary entanglement and contact zone. Enide's eventual speech provokes a quest on which she must accompany Erec as squire to help him recover his good reputation. While many scholars read Erec as a wayward chivalric subject, I suggest that reading his increasing inactivity as a Erec and Enide tells the story of Erec, a knight at King Arthur's court, whose retirement to domestic bliss with his beautiful new wife Enide takes him away from his chivalric duties. To regain his knightly honor, Erec sets out with Enide on a series of amazing adventures.
