The first summit attempt began to go pear-shaped the moment we left Camp One. Departing too late in deteriorating weather, many of us didn't make it to Makalu La until well into the night in snow flurries and gusting winds. Beyond exhaustion, we arrived to find that the Sherpas had only brought three tents for the entire expedition. The Makalu Base Camp Trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. Those on the left side of the plane will have a birds-eye view of the eastern Himalaya. From Tumlingtar it is a 4 hour drive to Num, the start of the trek.
