Stratfield Saye is a small village and civil parish in the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane and the English county of Hampshire. The parish includes the hamlets of West End Green, Fair Oak Green and Fair Cross. In 2021 the parish had a population of 285. Tours around Stratfield Saye House only take place during certain weeks of the year and have to be pre-booked. The dates for 2023 are yet to be released, but information on ticket prices can be found here. Meanwhile, Wellington Country Park, which is part of the estate, is open to visitors all year round. The 350 acre park is popular with Stratfield Saye Garden. The estate was a gift to the Duke of Wellington's from a grateful nation. It has a Victorian garden with a collection of trees, an American garden, a summerhouse, a camellia house, a herbaceous border and a rose garden. Loudon, in 1833, remarked that 'we expected the surface of the grounds to be flat, but were agreeably Stratfield Saye was the gift of the nation to Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington (the "Iron Duke"), for his victories in the Napoleonic wars; the duke later became prime minister and a prominent statesman. The House has been the seat of the dukes of Wellington since 1817. The dish Beef Wellington and Wellington Boots, or Wellies, were Stratfield Saye Park, Hampshire, RG7 2BZ. After the Duke of Wellington's victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Duke chose Stratfield Saye as his country estate.
