HMAS Waterhen was the first Australian vessel lost during the Second World War, and after it's loss the old and battered Scrap Iron Flotilla sailed back to Australia. They were refitted, before seeing action against the Japanese. The Scrap Iron Flotilla were true underdogs in the Mediterranean theatre. Their age made them seem obsolete HMAS Waterhen served as a joint base for RAN and US Navy between from March 1943 to June of the same year. The facility was used as a storage depot until its commissioning. The base was commissioned in December 1962 to support six Ton Class mine sweepers acquired from the Royal Navy.
