Given the futuristic look of the genre known as Op Art, it is fitting that the artist widely regarded as the founder of the movement is one of the few to have seen his works travel to space. In 1982, the pioneering French astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien took part in Victor Vasarely, the pioneering artist known for his significant contributions to Op art, sadly passed away on March 15, 1997, at the age of 90. Despite his physical departure, his artistic legacy continues to thrive, and his influential body of work remains evidence of his ingenious spirit and lasting influence on the world of modern art. Victor Vasarely (French: [viktɔʁ vazaʁeli]; born Győző Vásárhelyi, Hungarian: [ˈvaːʃaːrhɛji ˈɟøːzøː]; 9 April 1906 - 15 March 1997) was a Hungarian-French artist, who is widely accepted as a "grandfather" and leader of the Op art movement. His work titled Zebra, created in 1937, is considered by some to be one of the Vasarely died on March 19, 1997, in Annet-on-Marne, France. He was 90. Decades before his death, Hungarian native Vasarely became a naturalized French citizen. Hence, he's referred to as a Hungarian-born French artist. His wife, the artist Claire Spinner, preceded him in death.
