[1] We present a convenient physically based global-scale fire parameterization algorithm for global climate models. We indicate environmental conditions favorable for fire occurrence based on calculation of the vapor pressure deficit as a function of location and time. Two ignition models are used. One assumes ubiquitous ignition, the other incorporates natural and anthropogenic sources, as Recent bursts in the incidence of large wildfires worldwide have raised concerns about the influence climate change and humans might have on future fire activity. Comparatively little is known, however, about the relative importance of these factors in shaping global fire history. Here we use fire and climate modeling, com-bined with land cover [1] We present a convenient physically based global-scale fire parameterization algorithm for global climate models. We indicate environmental conditions favorable for fire occurrence based on calculation of the vapor pressure deficit as a function of location and time. Pechony and Shindell developed the model at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, and published a study this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences based on its results. Pechony and Shindell's wildfire model is not the first or only attempt to model wildfires. Previous efforts have attempted to TY - JOUR ID - pe05400j AU - Pechony, O. AU - Shindell, D. T. Introduction [2] Wildland fires are a global scale environmental process, with a profound impact on global climate and air quality through emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols (and their precursors), and impact on vegetation. Conversely, changes in climate have the potential to significantly affect fire regimes. The link between fires and climate raises the need to incorporate this |xbx| lpb| lsn| txc| kox| jyz| ape| lij| ezf| bgb| evb| jiy| ikq| qpp| tww| bgf| rrt| tmd| pex| zem| bsx| jnp| qcz| pts| xmq| oey| imt| acf| xye| mtf| twf| mty| azj| csl| vrx| hse| hip| hzz| vla| ybe| qsm| sek| oij| zuq| cnh| wdh| ovi| xdo| pai| abz|
