They were born in 1972 in the township of Umlazi, Durban. Muholi grew up during the height of apartheid in South Africa. In South Africa's post-colonial society, the LGBTQIA+ community is ostracized and criminalized. Zanele faced extreme discrimination for being a black lesbian. South African artists Nicholas Hlobo and Zanele Muholi have raised critical issues regarding sexual identity in patriarchal contexts since they premiered at the Michael Stevenson Gallery in 2005.
