The University of Chicago was incorporated as a coeducational: 137 institution in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Society, using $400,000 donated to the ABES to supplement a $600,000 donation from Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, and including land donated by Marshall Field. While the Rockefeller donation provided money for academic operations and long-term endowment, it was Julius Rosenwald (August 12, 1862 - January 6, 1932) was a Jewish American businessman and philanthropist.He is best known as a part-owner and leader of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and for establishing the Rosenwald Fund, which donated millions in matching funds to promote vocational or technical education.In 1919 he was appointed to the Chicago Commission on Race Relations.
