What is ascariasis? Ascaris is an intestinal parasite of humans. It is the most common human worm infection. Anthelminthic medications (drugs that rid the body of parasitic worms), such as albendazole and mebendazole, are the drugs of choice for treatment. Infections are generally treated for 1-3 days. The recommended medications are effective. Ascariasis. Among various species of intestinal nematodes infecting humans, Ascaris lumbricoides is the most highly susceptible parasite species to albendazole and mebendazole [1,8-10,42-44] (Table 1).The earliest clinical study in 1982 using albendazole (400 mg in a single dose) reported the cure rate (CR) (=egg negative conversion rate; NCR) to be 96%, and the egg reduction rate (ERR Ascariasis isn't spread directly from person to person. Instead, a person has to come into contact with soil mixed with human or pig feces that contain ascariasis eggs or infected water. In some developing countries, human feces are used for fertilizer, or poor sanitary facilities allow human waste to mix with soil in yards, ditches and fields. Medications. Anti-parasite medications are the first line of treatment against ascariasis. The most common are: Albendazole (Albenza) Ivermectin (Stromectol) Mebendazole. These medications, taken for one to three days, kill the adult worms. Side effects include mild abdominal pain or diarrhea. No difference in ascariasis cure was found in comparisons between single dose albendazole with single doses of either mebendazole or ivermectin; and no difference was found between single dose albendazole compared with giving multiple doses. Severe side effects were not reported.
