With it ended the rule of the East India Company over India, which would now be governed by Mangal Pandey was born on July 19th, 1827 in the village of Surhurpur in Uttar Pradesh. Like his father Divakir, he was a devout Hindu Brahmin. In 1849, the 22-year-old Pandey enlisted as a Sepoy in the 5th Company, 34th BNI were he served without incident until 1857. Pandey would have been aware of the rising discontent throughout the Army of Mangal Pandey joined the Bengal Army in 1849. As a private soldier (sepoy), he enlisted in the 5th Company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry in March 1857.
