The Castle. History of the Castle. Over 19 generations, the Stewarts and Murrays of Atholl have backed winners and losers, fallen in and out of political favour, won battles and lost them. They have almost all, in one way or another, left their mark on Blair Castle. The story will take you from Mary, Queen of Scots to the Civil War, and from Atholl Country Life Museum. This eccentric collection housed in the old village school celebrates local life through the ages, with exhibits ranging from a letter from a Canadian emigrant written on birch bark to a reconstruction of a 1930s post office. The museum also houses a Cairngorms National Park information point. The current clan chief is His Grace Bruce Murray, 12th Duke of Atholl. The Duke commands the only legal private regiment in Europe, the Atholl Highlanders. You can see them in all their splendour at the annual parade at Blair Castle. Murray clan members traditionally recognised each other by placing juniper or butcher's broom in their bonnets. Blair Atholl is an amalgamation of 2 small villages. Blair Atholl itself, the largest village in the area is bounded on the south side by the River Garry and bisected by its tributary, the River Tilt. It was created by the Dukes of Atholl round Blair Castle. To the east is Bridge of Tilt, part of the Lude estate. Atholl. Atholl or Athole ( Scottish Gaelic: Athall; Old Gaelic Athfhotla) is a large historical division in the Scottish Highlands, bordering (in anti-clockwise order, from Northeast) Marr, Badenoch, Lochaber, Breadalbane, Strathearn, Perth, and Gowrie. Historically it was a Pictish kingdom, becoming one of the original provinces of the Kingdom Atholl Country Life Museum. The museum covers virtually all aspects of traditional rural life in highland Atholl. Three small galleries plus a reconstructed post office and an audio-visual display offer a unique insight into the Blair Atholl community.
