Unlike the rest of Martin's sigils, the Greyjoy kraken is actually not a very traditional choice. The kraken itself is a legendary Norwegian sea monster capable of taking down whole ships, likely Greyjoy: The symbol of Greyjoy is the kraken. The kraken terrorizes the seas, reaching out its tentacles to grasp its prey before devouring them. The Iron Fleet dominates the Sunset Sea, and can strike anywhere with enormous force. The sigils are not meant to be taken literally and the analogy is in the abstract not the literal.
