On 8 June 1940, HMS Glorious and her escort destroyers, HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent, were intercepted in the North Sea by the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Despite valiant defensive efforts by the British ships, they were outgunned by the superior firepower of the German warships. Repeated attacks were made on the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau throughout April. On 10/11 April, 53 bombers - 36 Wellingtons, 12 Blenheims and five Manchesters, headed for Brest to try and finish off the Gneisenau which had been recently damaged by a Coastal Command torpedo bomber. Four hits were claimed on the Gneisenau. Scharn has 9 cruiser like guns with great range and good accuracy for a german BB. Gneisenau has 6 heavier guns but still weak for a BB. The actual Scharnhorst class had 8 x 21 cm guns as main armament in a twin turret fore and aft plus 4 more in casemates with 2 per broadside. The as-built Scharnhorst class also had a 6 x 5.9 cm secondary battery.
