Steelmaker SSAB Americas has announced plans to turn to fossil-free steel production by 2026. The firm, based in Sweden, operates mills in Alabama and Iowa, creating high-strength steel primarily from recycled scrap. The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that SSAB Americas' continued investment in its steel mill in Mobile County is moving forward. The current phase of work, valued at $69 million, is expanding the company's manufacturing footprint by 54,000 ft2 and adding new equipment to increase production capacity and efficiencies for quenched and tempered steels. (Image: SSAB) Mobile, AL — SSAB Americas, a division of global steelmaker SSAB, today announced plans to relocate the division's head office from Lisle, Ill., to Mobile, The new office will be located in Mobile. More details will be announced over the coming months, with the transition expected to take place throughout 2018. SSAB Americas also operates a second mill in Montpelier, Iowa.
