Momaday's father, acclaimed painter Alfred Morris Momaday, was a Kiowa Indian and his mother, writer Mayme Natachee Scott, was of English, French, and Cherokee descent. Momaday's mother derived her middle name from a Cherokee great-grandmother, Natachee.
