It seems that Cambyses won over Egypt without much naval support. The only evidence we have of a trireme in Cambyses's force is the one from Mytilene dispatched to Memphis after Abstract. The seventh to fifth centuries BCE was an age of growing conflict, but also of diplomacy and cooperation, between the Greek poleis and the states of the east Mediterranean. The relationship between Polycrates, tyrant of Samos, and Amasis, king of Egypt, is an example of how the different understanding of these relations by the parties involved may have promoted their instability. The excuse for this article is that the accepted reconstruction of the Hellenic policy of Amasis misinterprets statements of Herodotus and ignores the archaeological evidence. Most historians seem to agree that Amasis was put on the throne as the nominee of a fervid nationalist party; that about 565, to please this party, he concentrated the Greeks in Naucratis, reorganised, if not founded, at Amasis II was the Pharaoh of Egypt and, as Polycrates won battle after battle and conquered kingdom after kingdom, Amasis grew frightened. He knew that fighting Polycrates was dangerous, especially as it seemed that fortune favoured Polycrates.
