The genus Tulostoma was erected by Persoon (1794, 1801) encompassing two species, T.brumale and T.squamosum.Several new species have since been added from all continents, except Antarctica. In a monograph of the genus based on type studies, Wright (1987) accepted 139 species worldwide. Later studies generally confirmed those species concepts, nevertheless reduced some of the Introduction.
