The concrete Brutalist architecture-style building on UC Berkeley's east end is known to the campus community as Wurster Hall, named after husband and wife William Wurster and Catherine Bauer Wurster, Berkeley professors who together in the 1950s helped to create Berkeley's College of Environmental Design (CED), the first college of its kind in the world. To celebrate the renaming of Wurster Hall to Bauer Wurster Hall , UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design (CED) recently held a virtual toast and a panel discussion about Catherine Bauer Wurster's influence on American housing policy.It took place as part of "150 Years of Women at Berkeley," or 150W, a yearlong celebration commemorating influential Berkeley women. When Wurster retired in 1963, UC's "Brutalist" Wurster Hall was named for both him and his wife Catherine. The story of Bauer Wurster Hall begins in 1958, when Founding Dean William W. Wurster appointed faculty members Vernon DeMars, Joseph Esherick, and Donald Olsen to design a building to house the new College of Environment Design (which brought together architecture, landscape architecture, city and regional planning, and decorative arts under The campus of the University of California, Berkeley, and its surrounding community are home to a number of notable buildings by early 20th-century campus architect John Galen Howard, his peer Bernard Maybeck (best known for the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts), and their colleague Julia Morgan.Subsequent tenures as supervising architect held by George W.
