But when Mexico City architect Ricardo Legorreta won the commission to design the Visual Arts Center for the College of Santa Fe, he found inspiration in all the other colors of nature surrounding the brown town: the high-desert sky, the brilliant sunsets, the mountain flowers. Zocalo is a rare residential community in Santa Fe. Designed by the world-renowned architect Ricardo Legorreta, the community of Zocalo is defined by outstanding architecture, a distinctive sense of community and close proximity to the inspiring culture, history and beauty of Santa Fe. Located in the Northern Hills Legorreta's Visual Arts Center is a design at the critical edge between competing ideas of regional identity and image. As a Mexican architect, Legorreta could question the supposed authenticity of the Santa Fe Style. Formulated in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, this mixture of Spanish Colonial and Pueblo styles was mandated by a 1957 zoning Legorreta and his team proposed well over 100,000 square feet of structures divided among the Santa Fe Art Institute and two phases of the Visual Arts Center.
