The title refers to an ethnic group originating in North and West Africa who eventually became part of the Sufi order in Morocco. In Cohen's brief editorial statement, he notes that the Ira Cohen was born in the Bronx, New York, to deaf parents, in 1935 - his father was from a New York rag trade family - and Ira learned sign language early on. Ira Cohen (1935-2011) was an American poet, publisher, photographer and filmmaker.He travelled widely, most notably to Morocco where he published GNAOUA, a magazine devoted to exorcism, and later to Kathmandu, where he founded his Bardo Matrix imprint, issuing limited edition books printed on rice paper.His later years in NYC consolidated his role as one of the most important voices of GNAOUA, No. 1, edited by Ira Cohen Tangier: Gnaoua Press, Spring 1964.
