KAMPALA, Uganda 2/8/12 (PennWell) — Uganda's prime minister has commissioned the first part of the 250-MW Bujagali hydroelectric power plant, Bloomberg reports. The project, on the Victoria Nile River, is expected to be complete in July. So far, one of the facility's five 50-MW turbines has been activated, according to Uganda Electricity The Bujagali Power Station is a hydroelectric power station across the Victoria Nile that harnesses the energy of its namesake; the Bujagali Falls, in Uganda.Construction began in 2007 and concluded in 2012. It was officially inaugurated on 8 October 2012 by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Aga Khan IV in the presence of African politicians and investors. The government of Uganda, with help from the World Bank, wants to construct a 200-megawatt dam near Bujagali Falls on the Nile, just downstream from two other large dams.The costly dam's power would not meet the needs of the vast majority of the country's population, would drown a sacred waterfall, and could do further harm to Lake Victoria, the world's largest tropical lake.The Bujagali Hydropower Project (HPP) is a 250MW power-generating facility being built on the Victoria Nile River near the Town of Jinja, in Uganda, by Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL).
