Much debate has been held over the question of whether Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic approach to ethics and the other can do justice to the alterity of the other, as exemplified in Emmanuel Levinas's approach to ethics as first philosophy. The challenge to Gadamer and to hermeneutics more generally, comes obliquely from Levinas and more directly, from Robert Bernasconi, who argues that The hermeneutics is not understood now as a method, but as the fundamental way in which the human being is related to the Being and to the world. The project of philosophical hermeneutics developed by Hans G. Gadamer will continue the philosophy of Heidegger but in a different way. Heidegger was interested only by the ontological perspective of This paper addresses the question of the function of genre in Gadamer's hermeneutics by examining his treatment of Plato's political writings in the context of the "utopian genre." I argue that Gadamer's reading of Plato informs us on the hermeneutics of genre, which is otherwise undiscussed in Truth and Method.
