Malvern Star. (1966-2008) The name "Malvern Star" has been with us since the early 1900's. No 58 Glenferrie Rd, Malvern, Victoria, was the first home of the Malvern Star Cycle Works. From that small suburban bicycle shop with its first 12 months turnover of 6,818 pounds, it flourished to its peak 1957/58 of 2½ million pounds. Ernie Old (1874-1962) was a young man when he caught the cycling craze and started competing in races in rural Victoria in about 1900. Ernie Old, aged 73, at the Melbourne showgrounds in 1947. Old became a celebrity in his 70s when he challenged himself to ride from Melbourne to every state capital - a Bike rides less than 1hrs. ×. Malvern Star is Australia's most experienced cycling brand with a range of bikes to suit any riding style including kids, mountain, road and retro bikes. In possession of the prize money he set up his own bike shop at 58 Glenferrie Road, Malvern and in 1903 began building and selling his own brand of bikes. The Malvern Star was born, its logo featuring a six-pointed star which matched a tattoo on his forearm.
