Shoby, in the East Goscote Hundred of Leicestershire, is a Scandinavian compound from the Old Norse male personal name Sigvald, a reflexive of Sigvaldr/Sigvaldi and the Old Norse element by 'a farmstead, a village'.It may replace an earlier place-name meaning 'Sigewald's fortification' from Old English byrig (dative singular of burh). This parish was an "ancient parish" of Leicestershire until 1428, when it became an extra-parochial area. In 1858, the parish was formally established as a Civil Parish. In April, 1936, the parish of Shoby was abolished to enlarge Grimston Civil Parish. The former parish has been merged into the Grimston, Saxelby and Shoby parish. Shoby is a hamlet and former civil parish 12 miles (19 km) north east of Leicester, now in the parish of Grimston, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. In 2000 it had an estimated population of 39. In 1931 the parish had a population of 49. Gregory Brokesby who was a resident of Shoby became the Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1632.
