Took my new Armada Whitewalker 116s (185cm) for their maiden voyage on Berthoud Pass and ended up discovering the zone I chose to ski was right off of the re Welcome to the epicenter of backcountry skiing and snowboarding on Colorado's Front Range. Since the 1930s skiers have been exploring the slopes surrounding US Highway 40 as it climbs and descends Berthoud Pass. This was the former home of one of Colorado's pioneering ski areas and when it closed, the Pass quickly emerged as the most Berthoud Pass Ditch (11,245') The Berthoud Pass Ditch Trailhead is just north of Berthoud Pass on Highway 40. Driving north from the pass, the entrance is on the left at 0.3 miles from the top of the pass. [39.8026, -105.7772] There is a parking pull out on the right after the Ditch. After a large snow storm the pull out may not be plowed. In the 1930s and 40s, the Berthoud Pass ski area was the place to be. Thousands of patrons would strap into their wooden skis and venture to the pass every day to shred between the trees and down the mountain. For a brief speck in time Berthoud Pass was king, a golden beacon calling to skiers and snowboarders alike who were just discovering the Berthoud Pass Ski Area was Colorado's first ski area, but unfortunately didn't last much past the turn of the century.
