It's beautiful coloration consists of velvety copper and silver, and it features a variety of other unique features throughout its body. As a mature adult, a nuchal hump forms on males. The reality of a sistergroup relationship between Cichla and Crenicichla has been explicitly and repeatedly disputed by Kullander (e.g. 1983, 1986), and now implicitly by Oliver (1985).
