Located along the Bay of Fundy, more than 72% of the population speaks French—the highest share of any municipality in Nova Scotia. During the winter of 1755, 120 Acadians found refuge here and escaped deportation. In 1769 the first mass in Claire was celebrated here and is the site of the first Acadian cemetery in Claire.
