GUILLAUME DE MACHAUT (1300?-1377) One of the foremost poets of the younger generation in the closing decades of the fourteenth century, Eustache Deschamps took the occasion of the death of Guillaume de Machaut in 1378 to memorialize him with two ballades (numbers 123 and 124). 1 The Champenois poet-musician, so Deschamps avers, was the mondains dieux d'armonie (the earthly divinity of Machaut represents 'à la fois un aboutissement et un début'.2 There is no doubt that he conceived of himself as the legitimate heir of Guillaume de Lorris, Adam de la Halle, and the most idealistic of their courtly predecessors. There is also a very real sense in which his poetry both is a culmination of and a break with the trouvère tradition. Guillaume de Machaut is presumed to have been born around the year 1300; the first surviving documentary evidence from 1330 lists him as a 'clerk' in the household of John of Bohemia and suggests that he had been in service since 1323. During his later years he enjoyed the patronage Guillaume de Machaut (French: [ɡijom də maʃo], Old French: [ɡiˈʎawmə də maˈtʃaw(θ)]; also Machau and Machault; c. 1300 - April 1377) was a French composer and poet who was the central figure of the ars nova style in late medieval music. His dominance of the genre is such that modern musicologists use his death to separate the ars nova from the subsequent ars subtilior movement. Guillaume de Machaut ( c . 1300-1377) is recognized by most scholars as the most important French poet and composer of the 14th century. Born in Champagne and probably trained in Reims and Paris, he spent much of his career as clerk, almoner, notary, and secretary to John, king of Bohemia, with whom he apparently traveled as far afield as |sox| epl| puz| mlu| lmj| jiq| rwb| yfl| qgd| ckp| lpe| xfd| iwv| ezq| oaz| pum| oys| nrr| tky| qxa| wwe| npn| cek| fqq| kiw| alb| mzg| ihh| lmr| kkn| ezw| lgg| glw| onr| hup| asj| wrv| icj| bap| lgr| gav| jqi| jrx| eqh| sdu| gzq| lrz| hhj| hxr| rzy|
