Central America. Tikal. Templo IV, at 65m, is the highest building at Tikal and the second-highest pre-Columbian building known in the western hemisphere, after La Danta at El Mirador. Tikal's Temple IV is known mostly for its height and the views from the top. It is the tallest Mayan pyramid discovered thus far and at 230 feet it is almost two and a half times taller than El Castillo at Chichen Itza. The pyramid is mostly unrestored except for the very top, meaning the sanctuary itself, the roof comb Temple IV is the tallest temple-pyramid at Tikal, measuring 70 meters (230 ft) from the plaza floor level to the top of its roof comb. Temple IV marks the reign of Yik'in Chan Kawil (Ruler B, the son of Ruler A or Jasaw Chan K'awiil I) and two carved wooden lintels over the doorway that leads into the temple on the pyramid's summit record a Tikal. Templo V is a remarkably steep structure (57m high) that was built sometime between the 7th and 8th centuries AD. It consists of seven stepped platforms and, unlike the other great temples, has slightly rounded corners. A recent excavation of the temple revealed a group of embedded structures, some with Maya calendars on their walls. In all likelihood, Ruler B lies within Temple IV. Published references by the Tikal Project up to now have considered Structure 5D-73 to be the likely place of Ruler B's burial.
