Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) construction work was formally inaugurated on 24 March 2005. Finally, it started its academic activities on 22 June 2006. It is the fifth of 12 such universities the government decided in 1997 to establish in the 12 erstwhile greater districts where there was no university. The aim of founding a Noakhali district lies under Chittagong division, and has an area of 4,200 square kilometres. The main rivers in the area are the Bamni and Meghna. It is bounded by Cumilla district on the north, the Meghna estuary and the bay of bengal on the south, Feni and Chattogram districts on the east, Lakshmipur and Bhola districts on the west. The Greater Noakhali region predominantly includes the districts of Noakhali, Feni and Lakshmipur in Bangladesh, though it has historically also included Bhola, Sandwip and some southern parts of Tripura in India and southern Comilla. The history of the Noakhali region begins with the existence of civilisation in the villages of Shilua and Bhulua.
