Alban, St. The first Christian martyr in Britain. The date of his death is either c. 209 or c. 305. He was converted to Christianity by a fugitive priest he sheltered, in whose cloak he was arrested. He was subsequently put to death. His shrine is in St Albans Abbey. Feast day, 20 June. St. Alban's is the only English-speaking Anglican-Episcopal congregation in the Diocese of Tokyo of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai (the Holy Catholic Church of Japan, that is the Anglican Church in Japan.) Its members come from churches representing all five continents as well as Japan. It used to be called Verulamium and was the third-largest city in Roman Britain. According to this, St. Alban was a pagan living at Verulamium (now the town of St. Albans in Hertfordshire), when a persecution of the Christians broke out, and a certain cleric St Alban's, Tokyo. St. Albans is the name of a community in the borough of Queens in New York City.
