Here's guide Terray Sylvester's recap of the two-day climb of Iliniza Norte: Hello! This is Terray calling in for the Madison Mountaineering Ecuador Volcanoes expedition on January 28th. We are just about back to the parking lot after successfully climbing Iliniza Norte over the course of two days. Yesterday we hiked up to the New Horizons Iliniza volcano. Illiniza is a glacier-covered stratovolcano 55 km southwest of Quito, Ecuador. It has 2 peaks 1.8 km apart, Illiniza Sur (5248 m) and Illiniza Norte (5126 m) and forms a prominent landmark west of the Interandean valley. Iliniza Norte is the remnant of the older volcanic edifice, while Iliniza Sur is a younger stratovolcano of The Illinizas are a pair of volcanic mountains that are located in the north of Latacunga, Cotopaxi, Ecuador. They are located in the Illinizas Ecological Reserve . These twin mountains are separated by a saddle that is about a kilometer long. The peaks are among the highest in Ecuador, with Illiniza Sur standing slightly taller than Illiniza Norte, its northern counterpart, at 5245 metres and To get to the Ilinizas by public transport: First, take a bus from Quito to Machachi (1 hour). Then, in Machachi you will change busses and take the one going to El Chaupi (1 hour). From El Chaupi you can take a Jeep to "Campo de la Virgen" where the trekking begins. The price is about $10 one way or $20 round trip. The two glacier-covered peaks of Iliniza volcano are prominent landmarks west of the Interandean Valley. The smaller Iliniza Norte is a remnant of the main volcanic edifice located 1.8 km NNW of the younger Iliniza Sur, an andesitic-dacitic stratovolcano surrounded by thick pyroclastic-flow deposits.
