Noted colonial architect Mortimer William Lewis bought the first piece of what would become a 42-acre (17ha) parcel of land on Sydney's eastern beaches in 1836, in the area that was later named Bronte.Lewis cleared part of the site and laid the foundations of a house but, within a few years, was hit by an economic downturn that forced him to sell.
