Photojournalist Derek Waldrip looks into how the iconic suit became so popular ahead of National Seesucker Day. As temperatures climb, it's time to revisit every gentleman's favorite warm-weather staple: seersucker. It's light and cool, sophisticated and classic - and perfect for summertime events. But many who wear seersucker are unaware of its history, aren't totally confident in wearing it, and need tips on how to keep it fresh and crisp. We have your guide. When Seersucker was originally traded in India through the East India Company in the 1600s, it was known as "shirushakar" which, in Persian, is "milk and sugar.". It was given this name because the first pattern that was created was made with a light tan (hence, sugar - cane sugar) and a creamy white (like sugar). This is a technique known as a slack tension-weave, where one of the stripes of cotton is woven more tightly than the other, causing it to pucker. The benefits are twofold. Firstly, seersucker Seersucker retains the comfort, breathability, and durability cotton is known for but is a very light weave fabric with a characteristic "puckered," or crinkled, look. This puckering is one reason seersucker is so light on the skin - it traps little insulative pockets of air near the body to keep you cooler.
