Sam Langford, born on March 4, 1883, in Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, Canada, rose from challenging beginnings to become one of the most feared and respected fighters in the history of professional boxing. Known as the "Boston Bonecrusher," Langford's extraordinary career spanned several weight classes, showcasing his unparalleled skill, power, and resilience. Early Career and By 1944, Langford was blind, all but forgotten and living in poverty in a dingy tenement in Harlem, N.Y. In January of that year, sportswriter Al Laney of the New York Herald Tribune decided to write a story about Langford, a great boxer who had seemingly vanished from the face of the earth. The search proved futile for quite a while. Sam, while almost completely blind, won by a first round knockout. Incredibly, he would go on to have another thirty fights, winning 23 of them, before finally calling it a career. Langford retired when he was 43 years old.
