President Abraham Lincoln made himself readily available to many photographers of the era, leaving a large and varied photo legacy. This carte-de-visite is based on an Anthony Berger photograph made at Mathew Brady's Washington, D.C., gallery in 1864. Starting in the 1860s people exchanged and collected card photographs like this to help them remember family and celebrities. This portrait shows President Abraham Lincoln and his youngest son, Tad. The original photograph was taken by Anthony Berger in the Mathew Brady studio in Washington, D.C., on February 9, 1864. D.C. Burnite & Company of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, made this carte-de-visite from a copy of Berger's photo. Because of its appealing subject of Abraham Lincoln as a father, it was a popular image to Anthony Berger of Mathew Bradys Gallery photographed Lincoln in his White House office and Cabinet Room on April 26, 1864. The picture was set up by the painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter. The damage to Lincoln's face may have been caused when Tad locked the photographer out of the temporary darkroom in the house. A. Interestingly, in the 1890 Brooklyn Directory, the only Anthony Berger listed there is a locksmith living at 542 Greene Avenue. That was the address of the Anthony Berger and his wife who purchased the lot at Green-Wood in 1891.
