The stereotype of the 'noble Moor' is dismantled in Iqbal Khan's Iago acquires a treasured handkerchief that belonged to Desdemona and uses it as 'proof' of the affair. Increasingly maddened by jealousy, Othello orders Iago to kill Cassio and smothers Desdemona himself. Emilia discloses her husband's plot and Othello, tormented by grief and remorse, kills himself. The first actor to play the title role in Othello was Richard Burbage, who along with William Shakespeare, was a leading member of the King's Men theatre company. After the Restoration and the re-opening of the theatres, Margaret Hughes became the first recorded woman to perform on the English stage, when she played Desdemona on 8 December 1660. The first performance of this production took place on 9 April 1999.
