Every star we see in the sky has at least one planet orbiting it, says astronomer Sara Seager. So what do we know about these exoplanets, and how can we find Sara Seager (SS): People have been thinking about trying to find signs of life for a hundred years. This equation is a purposeful take-off on the Drake equation, which was about the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. Frank Drake wrote that equation because he was using radio telescopes to look for life. It was relevant then and still is. Sara Seager is searching for life beyond the solar system — and says the world is ready. "I call it 'the awakening.'. The whole world is waking up to the fact that we're getting close to finding other Earths and signs of life," says Sara Seager, an MIT astrophysicist who is working to find life on planets outside our solar system. Soon, she published pioneering papers exploring the likely atmospheres of these exotic worlds and how we might identify an Earth-like "twin.". Exoplanet research now turns up new wonders nearly every week, and in 2013 Seager won a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Fellowship for her discoveries.
