Ice fishing for one of the strangest fish in North America! The eelpout, sometimes called ling or burbot is the only freshwater cod that lives across parts eelpout, any of more than 250 species of elongated marine fishes of the family Zoarcidae, found in cold waters and abundant in Arctic and Antarctic regions. Eelpouts are thick-lipped, eel-shaped fishes with the dorsal and anal fins connected around the end of the tail and with small pelvic fins that, if present, are near the gills. Burbot is only one of numerous names this cold-water species from the cod family goes by. Many of the fresh water cod's nick-names can't be mentioned, but here is a list of the most common: Eel Pout, Lawyer, Ling, Cusk, Lush, Loche, Mudblow and Poor Man's Lobster. For three days in February, the population of Brent Getzler, of Roosevelt, Minn., caught the big 'pout, which weighed 19.67 pounds — 19 pounds, 11 ounces — on a certified scale. Once all the paperwork is complete, Getzler's big eelpout will break the old record of 19 pounds, 8 ounces, set in February 2012 on Lake of the Woods by Aaron Guthrie of Bemidji.
