This may be the reason why these shrubs are often found emerging from fissures in rocks. This plant is very frost tolerant. known to botanists in 1895 as Greyia flanaganii Bolus. In the vernacular it is known as the Kei beacon tree or Kei baakhout, since it has not been found anywhere else. However, despite its rarity, ancient origin and exquisite flowers, G. flanaganii has remained in comparative obscurity.
