Mission San Jose was founded in June 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. It was the 14th of 21 Spanish missions in Alta (Upper) Jose de Jesus Vallejo was appointed civil administrator and the mission lands were divided into ranchos. The native people fled the mission, many of them died of disease and starvation, unable to readjust to The California Nursery Company's history dates back to Jose de Jesus Vallejo (1797-1882) who served as the administrator of the old Mission San Jose and military commander of San Jose. Other notable owners were Jonas Clark (1862), John Rock (1865), Williams Landers (1899) and the George C. Center of early day culture. 1949 Two buildings constructed on this site by Miss Olive Ryde to enhance the historic mission. 1962 Generous gify to the city by Miss Ryde and remains the cultural center of Fremont. Among Vallejo's siblings were: Jose Manuel Salvador Vallejo (1813-1876), Captain of the Militia in Sonoma and grantee of Rancho Napa, Salvador's Ranch, and (with another brother) Rancho Lupyomi; Encarnacion Vallejo (1809-1902), wife of John Bautista Rogers Cooper, grantee of Rancho Nicasio and other properties; Maria Paula Rosalia Vallejo (1811-1889), wife of Jacob P.
