Criterion is using Arrow's 4K restoration, taken from a scan of the 35mm original negative. It is presented here with Dolby Vision and a 2160p/24hz encode. The ending of "Videodrome" is one of the most confusing moments of the film. At first, we want to believe that the O'Blivions are righteous and that Max can be redeemed by them. However, once Videodrome is a masterpiece and shows just how far ahead of the curve Cronenberg was and, in many respects, still is. It's a disturbing film, but not just for the sake of it; nothing Cronenberg does is just surface level. The themes here run deep - media sensationalism, censorship, and the use of television as a device for control. Picture 8/10. Criterion's original DVD presented a fairly strong digital transfer, topping Universal's original DVD presentation, but their new Blu-ray clearly outdoes both I love Videodrome. I've consistently listed it in my top five favorite horror (ish) movies of all time. It holds up to and rewards repeat viewings, is visually arresting, and has some good performances and a compelling story.
