The striking glaciated valley of the River Ogden, lies west of Haslingden and in the north east section of the West Pennine Moors. You can start the walk from the Haslingden Grane car park which lies just to the north of Calf Hey Reservoir, just off the Grane Road. From here you can pick up footpaths heading west to the Ruins of Lower Ormerods As Haslingden Grane village developed, this little fold of farming villages lay a mere 300 yards from the centre. By the 1850s, there were three farmhouses. The first managed 15 acres and had three cottages and loom shops, the second had 10 acres and four cottages and loom shops, the third had 9 acres and two cottages and loom shops. This is a pleasant town and countryside trail taking you along paved roads and rougher paths as you make your way around Haslingden, Rawtenstall, and Edenfield, taking in Tap o'Slate, views over the moorlands, Alderbottom and Lumb Viaducts, and the Rivers Irwell and Ogden. The crisis of the 1880s led to the abandonment of poorer upland farms in many parts of the region, but the total depopulation of the Grane Valley is one of the most dramatic instances.
