Roberto de Nobili (1577-1656), who journeyed from Italy to India in 1605, was one of the earliest Jesuit missionaries to confront the complex challenges of communicating the Christian faith and adapting its teachings to a non-European culture. This article investigates inculturation in the twentieth century in relation to the example and practice of the seventeenth-century Jesuit missionary Roberto de Nobili. Monastic and liturgical attempts at inculturation in South India are examined as well as the critique offered by Dalit Theology.
