Back in 1975, Arnolfini was an oasis amid a no man's land of derelict wharfs and decaying warehouses - redundant relics of Bristol's distant heyday as one of the world's great ports. Forty Artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah's multi-screen film installation Vertigo Sea is an epic meditation on mankind's relationship with the watery world. Exploring themes of migration, environmental destruction and slavery, it was one of the most talked about works at last year's Venice Biennale. Now at Bristol's Arnolfini, the location couldn't be more fitting. Housed in an old John Akomfrah is an internationally acclaimed artist and filmmaker and founding member of the influential Black Audio Film Collective. His works explore post-colonialism, diasporic experience, and memory, and have appeared in many venues around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival (2011, 2013) and the first Ghana Pavilion at the 58th 16 January - 10 April 2016. The UK premiere of John Akomfrah's acclaimed video installation Vertigo Sea. Vertigo Sea, a three-screen film, first seen at the 56th Venice Biennale as part of Okwui Enwezor's All the World's Futures exhibition, is a sensual, poetic and cohesive meditation on man's relationship with the sea and exploration John Akomfrah is a hugely respected artist and filmmaker, whose works are characterized by their investigations into memory, post-colonialism, temporality and aesthetics and often explores the experiences of migrant diasporas globally.
