A 2017 investigative series by Oregon Public Broadcasting highlighted the deaths of three students as Chemawa Indian School, located in the mid-Willamette Valley north of Salem, is one of four remaining off-reservation boarding schools funded and operated by the federal Bureau of Indian Education (BIE).It is an accredited high school, with grades nine through twelve. Located just east of Keizer Station and Interstate 5 in Salem, Chemawa had 337 students enrolled as of last school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
