Krikalev's mission was supposed to last five months, and his training had not prepared him to be in space longer than this. Then the coup d'état happened. "For us, this came as a complete March 25, 1992. Finally, Krikalev got word that he would be replaced and could return to Earth. The last Soviet citizen landed near the city of Arkalyk in the now-independent Republic of Kazakhstan. This was his second mission in space. The mission was scheduled to last for 144 days. Little he knew that his stay at the space station would last twice as long as originally planned.
