Two things are required before the National Park Service will allow you to climb Mount Rainier: 1. a climbing recovery fee; and 2. a climbing permit. The climbing recovery fee must be paid by each person in your party before arriving at the park, and costs $52 for climbers 26 and over, and $36 for climbers 25 and under. The terrain flattens out somewhat above 8,000 feet, but offers little relief as the air grows noticeably thinner. Camp Muir comes into view around 9,000 feet.
